Understanding The Different Types of Trenchless Pipe Rehabilitation

Modern technology has brought us a remarkable plumbing solution: trenchless pipe rehabilitation.

Maintaining the integrity of your plumbing system is crucial to ensure the smooth operation of your home. Traditional methods of repairing damaged pipes often involve excavation and disruption. This can be costly, time-consuming and extremely inconvenient. Trenchless pipe rehabilitation methods offer a more efficient and less invasive way to address pipe issues.

In this blog, we’ll explore the eight types of trenchless pipe rehabilitation techniques and how they work.

Let’s dive in!

What Are The 8 Types of Trenchless Pipe Rehabilitation?

There are many different methods to repair or replace pipes using trenchless rehabilitation techniques. We’ll look into each to see just how far we have come from the traditional open-cut methods. Not only are these methods the least disruptive to your property, but they are easy and cheap.

1. Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining

Cured-in-place pipe lining, commonly known as CIPP, is a widely used trenchless rehabilitation technique. It involves inserting a flexible, resin-impregnated lining into the damaged pipe. The lining is inflated and cured in place, creating a new, seamless pipe within the old one. This method is effective for repairing cracks, leaks and even structurally compromised pipes.

Pipe Bursting2. Pipe Bursting

Pipe bursting is a trenchless method used to replace old or damaged pipes with new ones. A bursting head is inserted into the existing pipe, breaking it apart while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into place. This technique is ideal for upgrading pipes and increasing their capacity without the need for extensive excavation.

3. Trenchless Slip Lining

Trenchless slip lining involves inserting a smaller diameter pipe into the damaged one, creating a protective layer within. This method is effective for addressing minor damage, corrosion, and offset joints. It restores the pipe’s function and prevents further deterioration.

4. Sliplining with Folded Pipe

Similar to traditional slip lining, this technique involves inserting a folded or crimped pipe into the damaged one. As the folded pipe unfolds, it adheres to the inner walls of the existing pipe, providing a new protective layer. It’s a versatile method suitable for a range of pipe materials.

Inversion Lining5. Inversion Lining

Inversion lining is used for smaller-diameter pipes and lateral connections. A flexible liner coated with resin is inverted into the damaged pipe using air or water pressure. Once in place, the liner is cured, creating a watertight seal and reinforcing the existing pipe.

6. Grout-in-Place Pipe

Grout-in-place pipe rehabilitation involves injecting a specialized grout or epoxy material into the damaged pipe. This method is especially effective for sealing leaks, filling voids, and stabilizing the structure of the pipe. It’s a cost-effective option for non-structural repairs.

7. Mechanical Spot Repair

Mechanical spot repair is used for localized damage within a pipe. It involves installing a patch or liner at the site of the damage. This method is efficient for addressing small cracks, holes or joint separations without the need for extensive pipe replacement.

Shotcrete

8. Shotcrete

Shotcrete, or sprayed concrete, is used for larger-scale pipe rehabilitation projects. A layer of high-strength concrete is sprayed onto the interior of the damaged pipe, creating a new, durable lining. Shotcrete is often used for larger sewer and culvert pipes.
